Who’s Who: The Key Terms of Your NDIS Plan

Learning the language of the NDIS takes time and practice. Throughout your NDIS journey, you’ll encounter various professionals who play crucial roles in helping you manage and make the most of your NDIS plan. Understanding who is responsible for what will streamline your experience with NDIS funding and help you know who to turn to if you need assistance. Here, we’ll take a look at the different types of individuals and define their roles in supporting NDIS participants.

Key Terms and Roles in Your NDIS Plan

Local Area Coordinators (LACs)

Local Area Coordinators (LACs) work with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to provide NDIS access to participants, their families, and caregivers. They assist participants in creating and managing their plans and connect them with local and regional resources to maximize their NDIS benefits.

Plan Managers

Plan Managers assist participants and providers with the financial aspects of plan management. They help with budgeting, service agreements, and funding allocation. Their role is to manage funds, handle invoicing, and provide financial reporting, ensuring participants stay within their budget.

Coordinator of Support (Support Coordinators)

Support Coordinators help participants manage the supports within their plan and connect them with other resources. They assist in achieving NDIS goals, understanding available supports, and getting the most out of the plan. Specialist Support Coordinators are available for those with more complex needs.

Support Workers

Support Workers, previously known as attendant carers, work directly with participants to assist with daily living activities and support NDIS goals. They provide hands-on help and ensure participants can live as independently as possible.

Allied Health Professionals

Allied Health Professionals provide specific types of care. This group includes art therapists, dietitians, music therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, and more. Depending on the care required, some of these services may be included in a participant’s NDIS plan.

Therapy Assistants

Therapy Assistants work under the supervision of Allied Health Professionals. They provide care and support, assisting in the implementation of therapy plans but are not the primary providers.

Advocates

Advocates speak on behalf of NDIS participants. This can include parents, relatives, friends, or caseworkers appointed by the participant. Advocates have the participant’s best interests at heart and represent their wishes in various situations.

Nominees

Nominees are appointed to make decisions for participants who do not have parents or legal guardians. They act in the best interests of the participant and ensure their needs are met.

Participants

Participants are individuals who receive plans and funding through the NDIS. The goal of NDIS funding is to empower and support participants in achieving their personal goals and improving their quality of life.

Providers

Providers offer care to NDIS participants. This broad category includes registered and unregistered professionals such as physicians, therapists, medical specialists, and support workers who deliver services covered by NDIS funding.

NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency)

The NDIA is an independent agency responsible for implementing and overseeing the National Disability Insurance Scheme. They ensure the scheme runs smoothly and participants receive the support they need.

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme)

The NDIS oversees and distributes funding for supports provided to participants. This program aims to help individuals with disabilities achieve their goals and participate fully in life.

Early Childhood Intervention Coordinators

Early Childhood Intervention Coordinators focus on participants aged 0-6. They are specially trained to understand the developmental needs of young children and provide support similar to that of Support Coordinators but tailored to early childhood.
